Arthur J. Mueller, Jr., of Salem, New Hampshire, died Thursday, February 26th, at his home surrounded by his loving family, after a brief and courageous battle with lung cancer.

Arthur was born in Methuen, MA to the late Ruth (Campbell) and Arthur J. Mueller, Sr. He was a graduate of Lawrence High School in 1957. During his school years, he became an Eagle Scout, after which he worked in the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune Circulation Dept. for almost 20 years. He joined the Salem Observer as business manager in 1977 and became publisher and owner in 1991. He retired from the newspaper business in 2000. He occupied himself in retirement and put his passion for boating to good use by joining the sales staff of Rockingham Boat in Hampstead, NH until his illness in 2014.

Arthur was a true friend to many and served his community for many years. He was chairperson of the Salem Christmas Fund for 15 years, co-chairman of the Southern New Hampshire Boy Scouts Golf Tournament fund raiser, on the board of directors for both Salemhaven Nursing Home and Silverthorne Adult Day Care Center. He was a member of the Salem High School Band Parents and was a little league baseball coach.

Arthur was a long-time summer resident at Cobbetts Pond, Windham, NH and served on the Cobbetts Pond Improvement Association board of directors for many years. He loved nothing better than motoring around the pond in his pontoon boat. He not only taught his children how to fish but his 4 grandchildren as well. He was an avid boater and loved to fish with his good friend Robert Damphousse, as well as hunt with him. Arthur’s favorite vacation places were Wolfeboro, NH and Walt Disney World.

Arthur was a long-time parishioner of Grace Episcopal Church, Lawrence, MA, where he served on the vestry, was a leader of the Order of Sir Galahad Boys Youth Group, as well as superintendent of the Sunday School. In 2003 he and his wife joined St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Hampstead, NH, where he was also involved.

Arthur’s greatest joy in life was his family, especially his 4 grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his wife Carolyn (Thomas) of 52 years, his daughter Lynne C. and her husband James Horigan of Chester, NH, and his son, Scott A. Mueller and his wife Lesa of Windham, and his 4 grandchildren, Erin and Garrett of Chester and Nicholas and Tyler of Windham. He is also survived by extended family, cousins, niece, nephews and very good friends.

The family wishes to thank the Lahey Center for Oncology and Hematology at Parkland Salem, especially Dr. Lata Thatai and Dr. Gabriele Southgate and the amazing staff for their support during this difficult time.
