Retired United States Navy Chief Petty Officer Stephen G. Sweder Jr., 75, husband of Virginia Sweder, passed on July 28, 2020 at Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston, MA. He was born and raised in Lawrence, MA on April 19, 1945, to the late Stephen G. Sweder Sr. and Victoria Fedorchuck.
After graduating from High School he enlisted in the United States Navy where he traveled the world with his family as an Air Traffic Controller. After 31 active years in the Navy he retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1991. His greatest attributes were the love and care that he had for his family, as he was a dedicated and loving husband and father with a heart of gold who will be greatly missed. He enjoyed many hobbies; traveling, fishing, woodworking, and being in the company of his family, especially his grandchildren, having given each a special nickname. He is predeceased by his brother Dennis and wife Joan Sweder, and his faithful companions, Farley and Chance.
He is survived by his best friend and wife of 57 years Virginia (Brown) Sweder; son Stephen Sweder III and wife Laura of Nokomis, Florida; daughter Kimberly Stetler and husband Richard of Akron, Ohio; son Troy Sweder and wife Amy of Methuen, MA; daughter Tiffany Sweder and James Stankiewicz of Lawrence, MA; sister Phyllis Sweder of California; and sister P. Kathleen Officer and husband Dale of New Hampshire.
He leaves 9 grandchildren; Stephen IV and wife Amy, Shane and wife Lynnea, Jeannie K., Hunter, Donovan, Connor, Victoria, Kaya and Trey; and 2 great grandchildren, Charlotte and Benjamin.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours at Goundrey & Dewhirst Funeral Home, 42 Main St., Salem, New Hampshire on Thursday, August 6, 2020 from 4 to 7 pm with service immediately following in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
