Raymond E. Gilbert

Raymond E. Gilbert, 84 of Lawrence, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Methuen Village Assisted Living after a period of declining health.

Born in Methuen, he was the son of the late Albert and Louise Gilbert. Ray was a lifelong resident of Lawrence and a proud graduate of Central Catholic High School. He spent some time working at Raytheon in Andover before he found his calling with the City of Lawrence, serving as the Housing Code Inspector from 1983 until he retired in 2020 at the age of 79. In his years with the city, Ray became known for his sharp eye and dedication to making sure every home and building met safety standards. His colleagues and the community knew they could count on him for thorough inspections and genuine care for everyone’s well-being. Ray was also a huge sports fan, known among friends as the guy to talk to about anything sports-related whether it was baseball, football, or basketball. Ray always had an opinion and a story, and he loved nothing more than a good sports debate. His passion for the game and his encyclopedic knowledge made him the go-to guy for friends around town.

Ray was married to the late Ellen (Wolfendale) Gilbert, and they shared 29 wonderful years together. He leaves behind his loving sisters: Diane Sweet of Margate, FL; Donna Caldes of Deerfield Beach, FL; Leila Ruth Maxwell and her husband Rick of Yarmouthport, MA; Lauretta Bertrand of Derry, NH; and Lisa Riel and her husband Bruce of Windham, NH. He was “Uncle Ray” to a whole crew of nieces and nephews who adored him.

Family and friends are invited to an hour of visitation on Saturday December 7, 2024 from Noon to 1:00 pm at the Goundrey Dewhirst Funeral Home 42 Main Street, Salem, NH.
