Mildred Burns Obituary

Mildred “Millie” L. (Maranto) Burns, 88, formerly of Salem, NH passed away Monday, February 10, 2020 at Exeter Hospital, Exeter, NH after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma.

Millie was born on March 15, 1931 in Lawrence, MA.  She grew up in Lawrence, attending local schools and graduating from Lawrence High School in 1948. She went on to receive her RN nursing degree from Lawrence General Hospital School of Nursing in1951.

In June 1953, she married Robert D. Burns and together they made their first home in South Lawrence, later moving to Salem, NH in1966.  Millie worked at Lawrence General Hospital for over 25 years in various capacities and departments including intensive care, emergency and pediatrics.  She later worked as a school nurse at Salem High School and in long term care facilities throughout the Greater Lawrence area as Director of Nursing.  Millie was a nurse for 52 years until her retirement in 2003.

Millie loved being a nurse and caregiver and prided herself in her long and rewarding career.  She loved to sing and had a beautiful voice.  She enjoyed reading, doing word search, and watching game shows, her favorites being Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Cash Cab. Millie also enjoyed yearly trips to Aruba with her aunts and cousin. She loved fashion, shopping and getting dressed up, especially for Saturday night “dates” with Bob. But her greatest love was spending time with her family especially her 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Millie was predeceased by her husband, Robert Burns in 1984, her parents Samuel and Mildred (Eichhorn) Maranto and her brother, Richard Maranto. She will be greatly missed by her son, Randall of Richmond, NH, her daughter, Laurie Norton and her husband Michael of Kingston, NH. Grandchildren Tavis Burns of Washington, DC, Julian Burns of Exeter, NH, Ian Norton and Emma Norton of Kingston, NH, Great grandchildren Samuel and Lucy Burns of Exeter, NH.  She is also survived by sister-in-law Elsie Maranto, aunt Eunice Veit, 2 nephews, 1 niece and many cousins.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr.Panos Fidias MD, Dorothy Doran NP and the entire staff of the Center for Cancer Care at Exeter Hospital for their wonderful care and support throughout Millie’s illness.
