Alphonse “Al” J. Thompson – Salem, NH

 Alphonse “Al” J. Thompson, aged 89, of Salem, NH, passed away peacefully at Salemhaven Nursing Home, in Salem, NH. Alphonse was born in Lawrence, MA, on July 30, 1935, and was the son of the late Alphonse and Mary (Travers) Thompson. Al was raised in Lawrence and attended Central Catholic High School. He later served in the US Navy and was stationed in Washington, DC. After his discharge from the Navy, he went on to work for Bay State Gas Company, retiring after 40 years of service.

Alphonse was an active member of the Merrimack Valley Country Club in Methuen, MA for 50 plus years and wintered every year for 20 plus years in Florida, where he loved to golf, fish, hang out by the pool or at the racetrack, and dine with friends. Al's greatest joy in life was his time as a very involved father and grandfather.

Al was married to Nancy (Leary) Thompson for 41 years, and after her death, he married Maureen (Schiavone) Thompson. He is predeceased by his brother, Thomas Thompson, and survived by his sons Kevin Thompson, Chris Thompson and his wife Kim, daughter Maureen Smith and her husband Rick, brother Arthur Thompson, brother Ray Thompson and his wife Pat, sister-in-law Phyllis Thompson, and his grandchildren Patrick, Christian, Chad, and Casey Thompson, Riley, Maura, Matt, and Mike Smith.

We would like to acknowledge the excellent care he received while at Salemhaven Nursing Home. Calling hours will be held at Goundrey Dewhirst Funeral Home, 42 Main Street, Salem, NH 03079 on Friday, August 23, 2024, from 4 - 7 pm. A short service will immediately follow the calling hours at the funeral home at 7 pm
