Walter (Wladyslaw) Rejt, 90, of Salem, NH passed away at the Nevins Nursing Home in Methuen on Saturday, January 2nd, 2016. He was a former resident of Dorchester, MA.
Walter was born in Nowogródek, Poland to the late Kostanty and Dominika (Abramovicz) Rejt. There, he served as a Lieutenant in the Polish/American army during WWII. He was passionate about sharing many WWII stories, never repeating the same one twice. He came to the U.S. in 1952 on the USS General Harry Taylor, arriving in New York with his wife and baby daughter. Their names can be found on the Ellis Island Wall of Honor.
Walter was an accomplished shoemaker, machinist, and meatcutter. He loved the Red Sox and always looked forward to baseball season each year. He was proud of his heritage and served on the Board of Directors at the Polish-American Citizen’s Club in South Boston for many years. He was also a member of the Polish Army Veteran’s Association of America, Post 37, South Boston, MA.
Walter leaves behind his wife of 66 years Kathe (Scheubeck) Rejt, daughter Monika and her husband Robert Spillane, daughter Danushia Antonelli, son-in-law Anthony Antonelli, 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews in Poland and Germany, and a sister Tamara in Russia. He was predeceased by his daughter Christine (Rejt) Santa Lucia, his two brothers Kostanty and Viktor Rejt, and a sister Maruszka.
Friends may call on Thursday, January 7th from 4 to 7pm at the Goundrey & Dewhirst Funeral Home, 42 Main Street, Salem, NH 03079. A funeral service will follow at 7pm in the funeral home chapel. Burial will take place on Friday, January 8th at 11am in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester, MA.
