Shirley A. Rooney, 82, of Salem, NH died on Wednesday June 29, 2016 peacefully at home after a battle with cancer. Shirley was born in Woburn, Massachusetts, March 22, 1934.

Shirley was an organizer, facilitator, among other roles for over 25 years at the Bingo located at the Kiwanis Hall in Hudson, NH under the Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire a Non-profit charitable event.Shirley was also employed at Bradlees Department store for many years.

Shirley was an active member of the New Hampshire Brain Injury Association for over 25 years. After her son Timmy suffered a traumatic brain injury in 1985, Shirley led the effort to establish a program, Care for Head Injured Patients (CHIP) to support individuals with acquired brain disorder. In 1994 a program was opened to support these individuals under the Developmental Disability Waiver. This resulted in her son and others to receive extra care and therapy in a group home setting. She recently received an award from the Brain Injury Association for her 25 years of outstanding service for her many years of loyalty and dedication.    

Shirley was also a dedicated community partner for the NH Community Crossroads program as one of their behind-the-scenes angels who supported their fundraising efforts year after year diligently hand crocheting hundreds  of tooth fairy pillows which are passed out to the children who attend their annual Kid’s Carnival.

 She was predeceased in death by her husband of 61 years,  Daniel Rooney Sr., her son, Timothy Rooney and her granddaughter Heather Badeau.

Shirley is survived by her three sons,  Daniel Rooney, Jr. of Salem, NH, Richard Rooney and his fiancé, Wendy Gore, of Atkinson, NH, David Rooney and his wife, Katie of Rochester, NH and her daughter, Nancy Frontauria and her husband, Steve of Deland, FL.  She  also leaves behind her sister, Beverly Scott and her husband, Jim of Nashua, NH as well as 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many loving and devoted friends.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday July 6 from 4 to 7 pm at The Goundrey & Dewhirst Funeral Home, 42 Main Street, Salem, NH.  A private burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Salem, NH.
