After a courageous seven year battle with cancer, Mario passed away peacefully at his home in Pelham, NH. Mario was born in Faial, Azores, Portugal, and immigrated to Cambridge, MA, at the age of 17. He worked at Beth Israel Hospital until his retirement in 1994.

Mario was one of nine children born to the late Francisco and Adelaide (Correia) Matos. He is survived by Rita (Vicente) Matos, his devoted wife of nearly 48 years; children Susan (Matos) Nolan and Edward Matos; daughter-in law Angela (Trenga) Matos; son-in-law Jordan “Chris” Nolan; grandchildren Jared, Kyle, Jessica, and Nicholas; brothers Joe and Frank; sisters Adelaide and Maria das Dores; in-laws, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was brother to the late Cesar, Carlos, Manuel, and Antonio Matos. Mario loved enjoying time with his family and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Mario touched the lives of many people with his smile and good nature, and maintained his gentle sense of humor all the way to the end. Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing on Tuesday, April 28th, at 9:30 a.m. at Goundrey & Dewhirst Funeral Home, 42 Main Street, Salem, NH 03087. The funeral mass will take place at 12:00 at St. Joseph’s church in Salem, NH. Mario will be interred at Gibson Cemetery in Pelham Center, Pelham NH. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, all donations be sent to the American Cancer Society at 30 Speen St, Framingham, MA 01701.
