Katharina (Käthe) Magdalena Rejt, 88, of Salem, NH (former resident of Dorchester, MA) passed away April 27, 2016 at the Wingate at Andover in Andover, MA.
She was born in Kaiserslautern, Germany to the late Anton and Bertha (Wickel) Scheubeck. She came to the US in 1952 from Germany on the USS General Harry Taylor, arriving in New York with her husband and baby daughter. Their names can be found on the Ellis Island Immigrant Wall of Honor.
Käthe worked as a meat packer for Armour Co. until her retirement. She then became a full-time homemaker and babysitter for her beloved grandchildren. Käthe was loved and respected by all who knew her and was called “Ma” by her own children’s friends. She loved knitting, crocheting, cooking the most delicious German and Polish dishes, and baking her famous German cakes and Christmas cookies. Her cheesecakes and marble cakes were always in demand at family functions and holidays. She loved the Lawrence Welk Show and looked forward to watching reruns every Saturday night on PBS.
Käthe leaves behind her daughter Monika and her husband Robert Spillane, daughter Danushia Antonelli, son-in-law Anthony Antonelli, six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, a sister Liselotte Scheubeck Hilbourn in North Carolina, a sister Irma Scheubeck Skipper in Kaiserslautern, Germany and numerous nieces and nephews in the U.S., Germany and Poland. She was predeceased by her husband of sixty-six years Walter (Wladyslaw) Rejt, her daughter Christine Rejt Santa Lucia, three brothers Anton, Egon and Hans Scheubeck, and a sister Gertrude Scheubeck Niemiec.
