Darrell Lamphere, of Salem, NH, suffered a traumatic injury and died on August 20, 2015.

He was born on May 19, 1925 in Swanton, VT to Lucille Bertrand and Charles Lamphere. Darrell’s father died in 1929, leaving him behind with his older sister, Jeannette and his younger brother, Wesley. Darrell told many stories of his youth including being born with rickets (and having to be carried on a pillow), walking to school each day and picking beans to help support his family. When he turned 18, he enlisted in the Navy, completing his basic training in Newport, Rhode Island. He was then stationed in Key West, Florida; New Orleans; Portsmouth, VA; Norfolk, VA and lastly the Panama Canal, where he worked in the naval hospital at Coco Solo as a pharmacist’s mate. He also served in the Korean War, from 1950-1951.

Larry Martel, a fellow sailor, introduced Darrell to the love of his life, Lorraine Tucker and they were married in 1948. They resided in Manchester, Concord and West Lebanon, NH until they purchased their cherished home in Salem, NH, where they resided until Lorraine’s death in 2005.

Although he worked in the Hartford Woolen Co. in Vermont from 1946-1950, Darrell’s career for over 30 years was as a store manager for The Singer Co. He began working on Essex St in Lawrence, MA in 1962, and worked there until its closure.

Darrell and Lorraine spent their retirement years traveling all over the USA and the Caribbean with their family and friends. Their most memorable trips were a cruise to Alaska, a paddle-wheel boat cruise on the Mississippi River, New Orleans, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and their many trips to Orlando, FL with their children and grandchildren.

Darrell’s love of music (especially Big Band), Silver Screen movies, history (notably WWII) and baseball was passed down to his five children. He was especially proud of his children’s academic and career successes.

For the past 2 years, Darrell resided at the Warde Health Center in Windham, NH.

Darrell is survived by his five children; John(Chip) Lamphere and his wife, Rhonda; Linda (Bonnie) Kincaid and her husband, Jerry; Sharon (Shari) Omand and her husband, Kerry; Laurel (Laurie) Levesque and her husband, Dave; and Timothy Lamphere and his wife, Lisa. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 1 sister-in-law, 1 brother-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
